1. Counting & Number Sense
Counting isn’t simply reciting numbers.
Children are developing number sense when they begin to understand that numbers represent quantities.
Skills can include:
- Counting objects
- Counting in sequence
- Understanding that the last number counted tells “how many”
- Recognizing small quantities
- Matching numbers to quantities
- Understanding that quantities can be represented in different ways
- Beginning to recognize written numerals
Everyday examples:
“How many apples do we have?”
“Can you give me three blocks?”
This makes the distinction between rote counting and actually understanding quantity very clear.
